Vitznau may look tucked away between Lake Lucerne and Mt Rigi, but getting here is surprisingly straightforward.
Whether you’re travelling from Zurich Airport, arriving through Lucerne or driving through Switzerland, there are several easy ways to reach Vitznau and Chalet Oz.
And once you arrive, quite a lot of what you’ll want to do is within walking distance. Chalet Oz is in central Vitznau, with the Rigi Bahn station and boat landing both approximately seven minutes away on foot.
Here’s what is useful to know before you set off.
How do you get to Vitznau by public transport?
For most international guests travelling by public transport, Lucerne is the natural starting point.
Zurich Airport has regular train connections to Lucerne, with the journey taking around an hour. From Lucerne, you can continue to Vitznau by boat.
And if you have the time, the boat is such a good way to arrive. You cross Lake Lucerne with views of the mountains and villages along the shoreline. It takes a little longer than simply getting from A to B as quickly as possible but by the time you reach Vitznau, the holiday has already started.
The Vitznau boat landing is approximately seven minutes on foot from Chalet Oz. The Rigi Bahn station is at the same location, which makes it particularly convenient if Mt Rigi is part of your plans.
You can find more ideas for exploring the lake and surrounding area on our Experiences page.
Can you travel from Lucerne to Vitznau by boat?
Yes. Travelling across Lake Lucerne by boat is one of the easiest ways to combine the journey to Vitznau with a bit of sightseeing.
It is particularly useful if you’re planning a car-free stay, because once you arrive in Vitznau you have access to the boat landing, Rigi Bahn, village and lake on foot.
That means you can use Chalet Oz as a base for Mt Rigi, Lake Lucerne and Lucerne itself without necessarily needing a car every day.
Can you drive to Chalet Oz?
Yes. Chalet Oz has one private parking space for guests at the front of our family property.
From the parking space, there is a short uphill walk to the chalet behind the house.
It isn’t far, but it is worth knowing before you arrive with luggage, a pushchair or children who have decided that carrying their own backpack is suddenly an unreasonable request.
If you’re travelling with a second car, paid public parking is available near the village church.
Once you’re settled in, you may find you don’t use the car as much as expected. The lake, boat landing, Rigi Bahn and village are all within walking distance, while the chalet itself still has a peaceful, slightly elevated setting.

How far is Chalet Oz from the Rigi Bahn and Lake Lucerne boats?
Both the Vitznau Rigi Bahn station and the boat landing are approximately seven minutes from Chalet Oz on foot.
They are at the same location in the village.
That makes it very easy to build a stay around both Mt Rigi and Lake Lucerne. You can walk down from the chalet, head up the mountain on the Rigi Bahn one day and board a Lake Lucerne boat the next.
It is one of the things we like most about the location. Chalet Oz feels peaceful when you’re sitting on the balcony or in the garden, but you don’t have to drive for every outing.
What should you pack for a stay in Vitznau?
Layers are useful in this part of Switzerland, even in summer.
A warm afternoon beside Lake Lucerne can feel very different from a morning or evening at higher altitude, particularly if you’re heading up Mt Rigi.
For most stays, comfortable walking shoes, a light waterproof layer and something warmer for higher ground are useful additions.
If swimming in Lake Lucerne is part of the plan, bring swimwear. And if you’re planning proper walking or hiking rather than simply exploring the village, bring footwear suitable for the routes you want to tackle.
Families can pack a little lighter too. A travel cot and high chair are available at Chalet Oz on request, and the chalet has a washer-dryer, which can be particularly handy after wet walks or longer stays.
Do you need a car for a stay in Vitznau?
Not necessarily.
A car can be useful if you’re planning several trips further afield, but Vitznau itself works very well without one.
From Chalet Oz you can walk to the boat landing and Rigi Bahn in approximately seven minutes, as well as reach the lake and village on foot.
That opens up plenty of possibilities without driving, including trips on Lake Lucerne, days on Mt Rigi and visits to Lucerne.
Guests also receive our digital guidebook with local information, routes and practical suggestions, so you don’t have to arrive and start researching everything from scratch.
What can you do during a short stay in Vitznau?
If you only have a few days, there is no need to try to squeeze half of Switzerland into them.
A simple three-day rhythm could be:
- one day exploring Mt Rigi
- one day around Lake Lucerne, perhaps including a boat trip
- one slower day in and around Vitznau
That slower day might mean a walk, time by the lake, lunch in the village, an afternoon back at Chalet Oz or private wellness in the evening.
Harmony Wellness Suite is available separately to Chalet Oz guests and is completely private during your booked time. Chalet Oz guests receive CHF25 off each standard Harmony Wellness booking.
If you’re staying longer, you can add Lucerne, more time on Mt Rigi, longer walks and some of the other places we recommend around the region.
Our Experiences page is a good place to start planning.
Is Vitznau a good base for Lake Lucerne and Mt Rigi?
Yes, particularly if you want access to both without staying somewhere that feels busy.
Vitznau sits directly on Lake Lucerne and at the foot of Mt Rigi. From Chalet Oz, the main transport links for both are within walking distance.
That balance is very much what Chalet Oz is about: peaceful, but central enough that getting out and doing things doesn’t become a logistical exercise. The property is designed as a comfortable base for up to four guests, with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, private balcony and the practical things that make a few days away easier.
Planning your journey to Chalet Oz
However you choose to arrive, it helps to think about the journey as part of the stay rather than simply something to get through.
Come via Lucerne and take the boat if you have time. Drive if that makes more sense for your wider trip. And once you reach Vitznau, unpack and enjoy having the lake, village and Mt Rigi transport close by.
