There are plenty of places to stay around Lake Lucerne. So what makes Chalet Oz different?
For us, it comes down to a fairly simple idea: a holiday home should be lovely to stay in, but it also needs to work properly once you’ve unpacked.
Chalet Oz is a family-run, two-bedroom holiday chalet in central Vitznau for up to four guests. You have your own space, a full kitchen, private balcony and garden, while Lake Lucerne, the Rigi railway and Vitznau boat landing are all close enough to reach on foot.
It is personal without being intrusive, peaceful without being cut off from everything, and set up for the sort of everyday details that can make a few days away considerably easier.
What is Chalet Oz like inside?
Chalet Oz is a modern timber chalet with two separate bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two single beds.
There is an open-plan living and dining area, a full kitchen and bathroom, giving up to four guests proper space to settle in rather than treating the accommodation as somewhere to sleep between outings.
That makes the layout flexible enough for a family, friends travelling together or a couple who simply wants more room than a hotel room provides.
There is also air conditioning for warmer days, Wi-Fi, Netflix and a washer-dryer.

Why does having a full kitchen make a difference?
Because holidays don’t always need another restaurant reservation.
A full kitchen means you can prepare breakfast before heading up Mt Rigi, keep drinks and snacks handy, eat with children when it suits them, or have an easy evening at the chalet after a day out.
There are also a fondue, raclette and chocolate fondue set if you fancy doing something rather more Swiss than making toast.
For families, it takes some of the organisation out of meal times. For couples, it means slow breakfasts or an evening in. And for friends, there is somewhere to sit around the table together rather than disappearing into separate hotel rooms.
That is the sort of practicality we care about at Chalet Oz: things that actually change how comfortable the stay feels.
What outdoor space do guests have at Chalet Oz?
Guests have two very different outdoor spaces.
The private balcony looks towards Lake Lucerne and gives you your own place for coffee, breakfast, a glass of wine or simply sitting outside for a while.
At the back of the chalet, the fenced garden looks towards the mountains and has a BBQ for meals outside.
So even on days when you have been out exploring Vitznau, Lake Lucerne or Mt Rigi, there is somewhere pleasant to come back to rather than simply returning to a room.
The fenced garden is useful for families too, although Chalet Oz is not fully childproofed and pets are not permitted.
Is Chalet Oz close to Lake Lucerne and Mt Rigi?
Yes. One of Chalet Oz’s biggest advantages is that it feels peaceful while still being in central Vitznau.
The Vitznau Rigi Bahn station and boat landing are both approximately seven minutes away on foot. They are at the same location in the village.
That makes it easy to head up Mt Rigi, take a boat across Lake Lucerne or spend time around Vitznau without needing to get into the car every time you leave the chalet.

What makes Chalet Oz different from staying in a hotel?
Privacy and flexibility are a big part of it.
You have the whole chalet rather than a hotel room, with two bedrooms, your own living and dining space, a full kitchen, balcony and garden.
You can have breakfast when you feel like it, come back from a day out and put your feet up, or spend an evening at home without sharing lounges, corridors or dining rooms with anyone else.
But you’re not completely on your own either.
Chalet Oz sits behind our family home, and we live here in Vitznau. We’re nearby if you need help or want a local recommendation, but we also know you have come away to enjoy your own time.
That balance between your own space and personal hosting is a large part of what Chalet Oz is about.

Can Chalet Oz guests book private wellness?
Yes.
Harmony Wellness Suite is a short walk from the chalet at the front of the family property.
It has a sauna, private hot tub in a glass-and-timber pavilion, revitalising shower, footbath and relaxation room.
The wellness suite is booked separately and is subject to availability. During your reserved time, the entire space is private for your group, with no other wellness guests sharing it.
Chalet Oz guests also receive CHF25 off each standard Harmony Wellness booking.
It works particularly well after a day on Mt Rigi, time around Lake Lucerne or simply when you decide that doing very little for a few hours sounds like an excellent plan.
What thoughtful extras are included at Chalet Oz?
Some of the things guests appreciate most are not particularly dramatic.
There is a welcome basket when you arrive, a digital guidebook with practical information and our own local suggestions, a free Vitznau-Weggis-Rigi Visitor Card, board games, picnic backpacks and the fondue and raclette sets.
Families can request a travel cot and high chair too.
None of those things is the reason you come to Lake Lucerne, obviously. But once you are here, they can make the stay run a little more smoothly.

Who does Chalet Oz suit best?
Chalet Oz accommodates a maximum of four guests and works particularly well for:
- families who want two bedrooms and practical space without a child-centred holiday complex
- couples who want privacy, a peaceful setting and room to slow down
- friends travelling together who want a comfortable base for Mt Rigi, Lake Lucerne and day trips
Those groups use the chalet differently, but they tend to value the same basic things: their own space, a central Vitznau location, thoughtful practical details and a stay that feels personal rather than generic.
Why is Chalet Oz family-run?
Because it genuinely is.
We built Chalet Oz as a family project in 2023, and welcomed our first guests in 2024.
Philipp took care of much of the practical building work, while Karen handled the interiors, furnishings and the many decisions involved in turning an empty timber building into somewhere people would actually enjoy staying.
We wanted to create the sort of holiday home we would choose ourselves: comfortable, practical, nicely put together and without too much fuss.
That is still how we think about it now.
