A Local’s Guide to Vitznau: Best Things to Do Near Lake Lucerne

Sunset over Lake Lucerne and Vitznau village with church and mountains

Vitznau is one of those places where you don’t need to plan every hour of the day.

You can head up Mt Rigi in the morning, be back beside Lake Lucerne in the afternoon and still have time for dinner in the village or a quiet evening at Chalet Oz.

That is one of the reasons we like living here. There is plenty to do, but very little of it requires a complicated itinerary.

If you’re planning a stay in Vitznau, these are some of the places and experiences we would put near the top of the list.

1. Take the Rigi railway from Vitznau up Mt Rigi

If it is your first visit to Vitznau, Mt Rigi is the obvious place to start.

The cogwheel railway leaves directly from Vitznau and climbs towards Rigi Kulm, so you can go from lake level to the mountain without needing a car.

The Vitznau-Rigi railway opened in 1871 and was Europe’s first mountain railway, which makes the journey itself part of the experience rather than simply transport to the top.

Once you’re up there, you don’t have to be a serious hiker to enjoy it. Mt Rigi has everything from easy walking routes to longer mountain hikes, including simple scenic paths around Rigi Kaltbad.

Or you can simply find somewhere to sit, have something to drink and look at the view. Not every mountain visit needs to become a fitness challenge.

From Chalet Oz, the Rigi railway station is approximately seven minutes away on foot, so it is an easy day to organise without moving the car.

You’ll find more Mt Rigi ideas on our Experiences page.

2. Explore Lake Lucerne by boat

The boat landing is in the same place as the Rigi railway station, approximately seven minutes on foot from Chalet Oz.

Scheduled Lake Lucerne boats connect Vitznau with places including Weggis and Lucerne, with services changing according to the season.

For us, the boat is not simply a way of getting somewhere else. It is one of the nicest ways to experience Lake Lucerne itself.

You can sit outside when the weather is good, watch the villages and mountains along the shoreline and make the journey part of the day rather than rushing to the destination.

A return trip to Lucerne works well, but you can also build shorter outings around the lake depending on the current timetable.

Just check the schedule before setting off. Swiss transport may be famously efficient, but the boats do not wait because you were finishing your coffee.

3. Swim or spend some time beside Lake Lucerne

You don’t necessarily need an excursion at all.

In the warmer months, Lake Lucerne is a perfectly good reason to stay close to Vitznau. Public areas around the lake offer swimming opportunities, and the wider Vitznau-Weggis area has a number of recognised bathing spots.

There are also opportunities for SUP and canoeing around Vitznau if you want to get onto the water rather than simply into it. Lucerne Tourism currently lists SUP and canoe hire in Vitznau itself.

This is particularly nice on a summer stay when you have already spent a day sightseeing and decide the next one can involve considerably less organisation.

4. Take a walk around Vitznau

You don’t always have to head up Mt Rigi to find a good walk.

The marked Vitznau Circular Route takes you through the village landscape, with viewpoints across Lake Lucerne and information about local flora and Vitznau’s history.

There are also walking routes throughout the wider Weggis-Vitznau-Rigi area, from easy lakeside stretches to more demanding mountain paths.

This is one of our favourite kinds of Chalet Oz day: start slowly, go for a walk when everyone is ready and come back without feeling as though the holiday required project management.

5. Have lunch, dinner or a drink in Vitznau

You don’t need to head to Weggis or Lucerne every time you want to eat out. Vitznau itself has several good options within easy reach of Chalet Oz.

For Swiss favourites and seasonal dishes, Hotel Rigi Vitznau is close to the Rigi railway station, so it works particularly well before or after a day on Mt Rigi. Its central location also means you can get there from Chalet Oz without taking the car.

Nostalgie Bar is a good choice when you fancy something relaxed and a little different without turning dinner into a big occasion. There are drinks, casual food and changing themed evenings, so it works just as well for a quick bite as it does for staying a little longer. Definitely try the Chicken in a Basket. It’s a winner!

Of course, you don’t have to eat out every night. Chalet Oz has a full kitchen, BBQ, fondue and raclette sets, so you can decide from one day to the next whether dinner involves a restaurant, the garden or staying exactly where you are.

We keep our current Vitznau restaurant and bar recommendations on the Chalet Oz Experiences page, along with links to the venues themselves. Opening days and seasonal hours can change, so it is always worth checking the latest information before heading out.

6. Spend a day in Lucerne

Lucerne is an easy day trip from Vitznau and gives you a completely different sort of day.

You can travel there across Lake Lucerne, spend a few hours exploring the city and return to the quieter pace of Vitznau afterwards. The Lake Lucerne Navigation Company operates scheduled services between Lucerne and Vitznau throughout the year, although frequencies vary seasonally.

For a first visit, you can simply explore the old town and lakefront.

And if the weather is being particularly Swiss about things, Lucerne also gives you several good indoor options.

7. Save the Swiss Museum of Transport for a rainy day

The Swiss Museum of Transport, or Verkehrshaus, is one of our strongest rainy-day recommendations, particularly for families.

It covers railways, road transport, aviation, space travel, navigation and plenty more, and describes itself as Switzerland’s most-visited museum.

This is not one of those museums where everyone politely walks around reading labels for twenty minutes before asking when lunch is.

There is enough there to make it a proper day out.

8. Book a private wellness evening

After Mt Rigi, a long walk or a cooler day beside the lake, this one tends to require very little persuasion.

Harmony Wellness Suite is on the same family property as Chalet Oz and can be booked separately for private wellness time.

There is a sauna, private hot tub in the glass-and-timber pavilion, revitalising shower, footbath and relaxation room.

The important bit is private. When you reserve the suite, it is yours during your agreed time rather than being a hotel spa shared with other guests.

Chalet Oz guests also receive CHF25 off each standard Harmony Wellness booking.

If wellness is something you definitely want during your Vitznau stay, arrange it in advance because Harmony accepts only one booking per day.

9. Have a day with no real plan at all

This does not usually make it onto lists of the “Top 10 Things to Do in Switzerland”, but we highly recommend it.

You do not need to spend every day ticking off attractions simply because you are on holiday.

Have breakfast at the chalet. Walk down to the lake. Stop somewhere for coffee. Come back and sit on the balcony. Go out again if you feel like it.

Chalet Oz has a private balcony looking towards Lake Lucerne and a fenced back garden with mountain views, so staying home for part of the day does not feel like wasting it.

Sometimes the best thing about being somewhere beautiful is actually giving yourself time to notice.

Why stay in Vitznau when exploring Lake Lucerne and Mt Rigi?

Vitznau works particularly well as a base because the mountain, lake and village all meet in one place.

From Chalet Oz, both the Vitznau Rigi railway and Lake Lucerne boat landing are approximately seven minutes away on foot. The chalet itself is slightly elevated and peaceful, but you don’t need to drive every time you want to go somewhere. The current Chalet Oz listing also confirms the chalet sleeps four and has two bedrooms, a full kitchen, balcony and garden.

That means you can have active days when you want them and much slower ones when you don’t.

Which, for us, is rather the point of a holiday.
