Grüezi from the top of the world — or at least it feels that way. The Rigi Bahnen cogwheel railway leaves right from Vitznau, so you can be climbing into the clouds within minutes of stepping out of the chalet. It’s the oldest mountain railway in Europe, and it still carries you at the same unhurried pace it always has, past meadows, cows with bells, and views that open up wider with every bend. At the top, Rigi Kulm rewards you with a full panorama over Lake Lucerne and, on a clear day, the Alps stretching out beyond it. There are gentle walking trails for those who want to wander, and benches for those who’d rather just sit with a coffee and take it all in. Bring a layer — it’s cooler up top even in summer. Go early to beat the crowds and catch the morning light over the lake, or head up in the late afternoon for sunset before the last train down. Either way, it’s the kind of outing that turns a “day trip” into one of the trip’s actual highlights, and it’s about as central to a Vitznau stay as it gets.
